You've spent all that time, energy, and money recruiting students, now the focus shifts to keeping the students enrolled and happy. The 2016 Spring Media Preferences survey shows that one of the keys to student retention is individualized attention from your college staff. Even as students become more digitally driven, they still crave face-to-face engagement from their professors, advisors, and student services staff. Email is an acceptable secondary form of communication, but anything beyond that doesn't resonate with students of any age.
While data also shows that text messages are not a bad choice for group projects, however it's still not preferable for professor/student communication. Times are changing though and we're starting to see a small shift in student's attitudes towards text message communication from the college. Spring's survey showed that more than 70% of students saying they are ok, like, or love receiving information via text message from teachers or faculty.
